Hunan Institute of Engineering

Hunan Institute of Engineering, located in Xiangtan City, Hunan Province, is a full-time ordinary higher education institution approved by the Ministry of Education and established by the People's Government of Hunan Province. The university is a pilot institution for the Ministry of Education's "Master's Degree Program for Cultivating Elite Talent to Meet National Special Needs," a participating university in the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program," and an implementing university for the "New Engineering Research and Practice Project." It is also selected under Hunan Province's 2011 Plan and a high-level applied characteristic institution for Hunan Province's "Double First-Class" initiative.  

The history of Hunan Institute of Engineering dates back to 1951, originating from Xiangtan College of Electromechanics and Hunan College of Textile Engineering. Xiangtan College of Electromechanics, founded in 1951, was under the former Ministry of Machinery Industry and was a key national model college for engineering vocational education. Hunan College of Textile Engineering was founded in 1978 under the former Hunan Provincial Department of Textile Industry. In June 2000, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Xiangtan College of Electromechanics and Hunan College of Textile Engineering merged to establish Hunan Institute of Engineering and upgraded to offer undergraduate programs. In 2018, it was selected as a high-level applied characteristic institution under Hunan Province's "Double First-Class" construction initiative.  

As of May 2025, the university campus covers an area of 1,830.6 mu, with a building area of 588,000 square meters. It has two campuses: the main campus and the Shuyuan Road campus. The university has 18 teaching units, 49 undergraduate programs, and 2 professional master's degree programs. The university employs more than 1,400 staff members. The total number of full-time students is 21,508, including 21,218 full-time undergraduates, 284 full-time master's students, and 6 international students enrolled for academic degrees.
